How to Paint the Sky Blue Again

by Maggie Bowyer

Art: Pauline Shen - “Pillars”

I start by dragging the edges of the invading storm back to the beach I let the downpour dump into the drink

I shine the sun with specialty shellac

I pick colors out of the prism and hold them in my hand for you

I grab a bit of blue a smidge of purple and red a bit of yellow to brighten it all I tell a dad joke while I drive you to the park You punch me in the arm every time we pass a Beetle We roll the windows down and smile at the smell of brine

I hold your heart in mine under an umbrella in case the rain reclaims the troposphere It might not always be blue skies but I will pull rainbows from the cosmos I will become aurora borealis for you

Let light leak from the cracks between my fingers

The last beat of my heart will be something beautiful for you

I reach for the past but my hand always comes back bloody
