“Wake”

by Maya Jacyszyn

Duty calls

the morning coos

and caws,

Mother Nature pays

in rain.

To the bedridden

nesters,

ballyhoo the undead!

Selfish sleepers

and faulty feathered

resters,

those take-a-day-offers

and mental health

havers —

the sunrise sounds

her mimosa-ed

alarm,

yellowed tangerine

get up,

perish sleep.

How fear awaits

the morn we

rise without

birdsong.
